Netflix Roundup: Thriller Movies For The Month Of October

This is one of my favorite times of year, because I love a good scary movie. However, nobody else in the household shares my love of horror movies, so I usually don’t end up watching them too often. And then quarantine hit, and suddenly I found myself with a lot more free time on my hands – so I’ve compiled my list of all the movies I’ve watched recently on Netflix!

  1. Visions: I love a good premonition movie. Something about realizing an important clue before a major event actually happens truly captivates my attention. Isla Fisher stars in this one and does a great job as the lead. The film definitely had its scary moments, and had me guessing until the end!
  1. Winchester: I wasn’t too interested in this movie other than the fact that parts of it were filmed at the famed Winchester Mystery House, a landmark of my hometown. I went on a tour of the house for a birthday party when I was in middle school, but I didn’t know too much of the story behind the strange woman who constructed a house to ward off evil spirits. Overall, the movie was better than I expected.
  1. 13 Cameras: This movie plays upon the feeling of always being watched – which really isn’t a difficult concept to picture these days given that everyone has security cameras around (and inside) their homes. The villain, a rental property manager, is one of the weirdest and creepiest movie villains I’ve seen. I think what bothered me more than the fact that he spies on the rental house tenants was the fact that he didn’t really speak at all. It wasn’t exactly a scary movie by any means, but for some reason that character really made my skin crawl.
  1. 14 Cameras: The sequel to 13 Cameras, so of course I had to watch this one as well even though I didn’t love the first movie. I wouldn’t say this one is better, but the villain definitely becomes more despicable. It was ironic that right after I watched this movie, we started discussing whether AirBnB’s might have secret cameras hidden within the properties.
  1. Red Dragon: I liked this one a lot. You really can’t go wrong with Anthony Hopkins. If you liked “Silence Of The Lambs,” this is a good pick! Definitely an intense psychological thriller!
  1. The Autopsy Of Jane Doe: Not for anyone who gets squeamish about blood and gore, because as the title implies, the whole storyline revolves around an autopsy of an unidentified woman’s body found buried inside a home. The plot itself wasn’t very scary, but the intrigue about the whole process of an autopsy made this movie suspenseful.
  1. 1BR: This one was definitely high on the creep-factor. A creepy apartment community, elements of torture, and a weird cult had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I really liked the ending of the movie, too – a perfect plot twist!
  1. House At The End Of The Street: Good acting (can’t go wrong with Jennifer Lawrence), interesting plot, pretty good psychological thriller. Good plot twists. Overall, I’d recommend this one.
  1. The Boy: This one was more of a mystery movie, but it had me creeped out because something about dolls always worries me. In this one, a nanny is hired to babysit a couple’s young son, only to find out she’s been hired to care for the doll version of the child they lost. The more she starts to believe the doll is actually alive, I sympathized more with her and the mind-games she was experiencing. Then, when the actual person the doll represented suddenly burst out of the walls, I was almost laughing. The movie completely fell apart for me there.
  1. Emelie: Who doesn’t love a good creepy babysitter movie? This one had me disturbed right up until the shocking final scene.
  1. In The Tall Grass: Creepy? Yes. Entertaining? No. As the title implies, the story revolves around tall grass…and lots of it. Lots of lingering shots of grass. Large fields of grass. People getting lost in the grass. That’s about it.
  1. Delirium: Zero points for Topher Grace’s acting, but a million points for how much this one had me guessing. You’ll be left wondering about the family secrets the whole time.
  1. The Platform: This was one of the few movies that I wasn’t actually sure if I could finish. While the story was inventive, there are a few disturbing scenes that are forever burned into my brain. An interesting tale about greed and redemption.
  1. Fatal Affair: This was a lesson that’s been hard for me to learn. Just because a movie shows up in the Netflix Top 10 list, doesn’t mean it’s any good. This one was outright terrible. Awful acting, awful dialogue, and a complete waste of time.
  1. The Occupant: A Spanish thriller that had me confused most of the time. It was full of plot holes, and didn’t seem believable enough at all. Another example of a movie that somehow ended up in the most-watched list on Netflix that fell way short of expectations.
  1. The Paramedic: Not a very suspenseful movie, and definitely not what I was expecting from the description. If you like stories that revolve around paranoid narcissists, this is a good one. The acting was great, but the story didn’t leave me as scared as I was hoping to be. The scene where the main character’s ex-girlfriend realizes she’s paralyzed just like him kind of made my stomach turn. Other than that, maybe a lot got lost in translation because I watched the English version.
  1. Would You Rather: I’m really not a fan of Brittany Snow as an actress, and she almost ruined this one for me. The plotline was intriguing, and although there wasn’t a ton of gore, some of the scenes were pretty brutal. The entire movie kept me wondering what was going to happen next, as if things could get any more dire, up until the film’s final ironic scene.
  1. Hush:  The main character is deaf and mute, which in itself ups the stakes for the audience as they have empathy for her and can sympathize with the feeling of being trapped, unable to hear or speak. A typical home-invasion thriller. I’d watch it again!
  1. The Silence: I didn’t have high hopes for this one, but I gave it a chance anyway. Aside from the weird people-eating dinosaur creatures who can’t see, the movie was pretty boring. Zero points for creativity because it was giving me way too much “A Quiet Place” vibes.
  1.  The Keeping Hours: I definitely wouldn’t categorize this is as a “scary” movie by any means, and I think the only thing that landed it in this category was the fact that the plot centers on the ghost of a boy who died in early childhood. Interesting story, but loses points because I was hoping for a scary movie.
  1. Polaroid: So boring, I fell asleep the first time I was watching it and had to start over again to finish it. It’s never good when a “horror” movie actually makes me laugh…but this one is just that terrible.
  1. The Darkness: This one was pretty spooky, until the family hires a “healer” to come into the home to get rid of the evil spirits that had been plaguing them and haunting their autistic son. The story had me interested until the chanting and wall-portal ruined it.
  1.  Malevolent: This one creeped me out. Pretty gruesome, interesting story, and definitely not what I was expecting. It was a little over dramatic at times, but I would recommend this one for anyone looking for a good thrill.
  1.  Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark: Casting Katie Holmes as the lead was a major failure, but overall the movie was alright. The mysterious, murderous creatures definitely made it a creepy film, but it lacked substance.
  1. Malicious: Another total Netflix fail. So, so bad. So awkwardly sexual in majorly disturbing ways. Do. Not. Watch.
  1. My favorite: 1408

This movie isn’t available on Netflix (or Hulu, I checked), but it’s a good one! This is what I always expect when I watch a movie that’s categorized as a “psychological thriller.” With John Cusack as the lead, this movie has so many twists and turns as a paranormal investigator/writer checks into a supposedly haunted hotel room. I love this movie so much that I’d still watch it even though it’s 13 years old!
